Wartburg, University of Iowa partner to offer accelerated master's degree in library science

Waverly, IA (01/22/2025) — Wartburg College has partnered with the University of Iowa to offer an integrated baccalaureate and master's degree program for students seeking a bachelor's degree from Wartburg and a master's degree in library and information science from Iowa.

The agreement will allow students to earn their Wartburg degree in four years before going on to earn a master's degree from Iowa in one year. Credits for the master's program, which typically requires two years to complete, would be earned during a student's final year at Wartburg.

"We know our students enjoy being on our campus and experiencing all that Wartburg has to offer, and we are excited to offer them a new opportunity that allows them to do just that while still graduating with a master's degree in five years," said Daniel Walther, chair of the Department of History at Wartburg.

Wartburg students from any major may be considered for the program, which also offers additional credentials in special collections librarianship and archives as well as book arts. The combined degree program also prepares students for further education in information science and interdisciplinary opportunities like law, health and informatics.

"This is a great opportunity for our students to complete a bachelor's and master's degree in less time, saving them time and money and allowing them to enter the workforce sooner," said Debora Johnson-Ross, Wartburg's vice president for academic affairs. "It has been a pleasure working with the University of Iowa administrators to make this transition as easy as possible for our students."
