McGuigan, Waheed selected as student speakers at Wartburg Commencement on May 26
Waverly, IA (05/09/2024) — Megan McGuigan of Story City and Rahima Waheed of Karachi, Pakistan, will deliver the student messages at the Wartburg College Commencement on Sunday, May 26.
Based on nominations from their peers and in consultation with faculty and staff, Wartburg College President Rebecca Ehretsman invited the seniors to give the remarks on behalf of the Class of 2024 at the ceremony beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the Hoover Fieldhouse & Track in the Wartburg-Waverly Sports & Wellness Center.
McGuigan, a music education major with a vocal concentration, will teach 9-12 vocal music at Glenwood High School following graduation.
At Wartburg, she was a soprano section leader and choir librarian for the Wartburg Choir, president of the college's National Association for Music Education, an Opera Workshop performer, and a Dance Marathon participant.
She also was an Orientation Staff leader and a Baldwin Leadership Fellow. She cheered for football, basketball, and wrestling, and was on the American Rivers Conference champion competitive team. She also volunteered with Wartburg College Sparkles, a cheer and dance team that includes students and community members of all abilities.
Waheed, a computer information systems major and a Davis United World College Scholar, is seeking a job in analytics and hopes to one day create a foundation that empowers women.
At Wartburg, Waheed served as the social media coordinator for International Club, the secretary of the Computer Science Club, and an ELITE consultant in Vogel Library.
Waheed was an operations intern for Global Atlantic Financial Group in Des Moines during summer 2023. She also has worked as a student manager in the college's Dining Services.
