Kate Huffman named Young Woman of Achievement

Six Wartburg College students and graduates were recently named 2014 Young Women of Achievement.

The women were selected as some of the most influential leaders in the Cedar Valley by the Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois and the Cedar Falls and Waterloo Business and Professional Women chapters.

Those honored were:

  • KarrieAnne Burke, a junior from Nevada studying religion and social work. Burke has volunteered with Special Olympics, March of Dimes, Kids Against Hunger and other organizations through her local Key Club International chapter.
  • Mikayla Cota, a sophomore from Red Wing, Minnesota, studying music therapy. She created and ran an acting class at a workshop for adults with physical, cognitive and intellectual disabilities.
  • Kate Huffman, a senior from Osage studying music. Huffman is president of Wartburg's Alliance and has helped coordinate numerous activities, as well as volunteering with the Wartburg Community Symphony Instrument Petting Zoo.
  • Alyssa Sager, a Wartburg College graduate now at Allen College as part of the colleges' degree partnership program. She was part of a committee recognized for hosting the most organized blood drive for the American Red Cross.
  • Courtney Schulte-Wikan, a junior from Waukon studying biology. She participates in crossed-aged teaching and first-grade mentoring.
  • Angela Zook, a junior from Mason City studying psychology. Zook has participated on service trips to volunteer at a Ronald McDonald House, serve food to the homeless and provide flood relief.

The women were recognized during the annual Young Women of Achievement luncheon. Sager and Zook each received a $500 scholarship.
